Description
The Class 507, or as we know it as the Merseyside Stalwart makes a valiant entry into the Rail Tags fleet as our second BREL 1972 Standard EMU joining the Class 313/2 after months of planning and production, thanks to Angel Trains’ Support!
Starting with the Class 502s, which at the time were life expired and unable to cope with the demand of the newly opened Link tunnel replacements were sought after and fast.
In the 1970s with the success of the Class 313, four units were sent to Merseyside to trial the suitability for a replacement fleet of trains. Results of these tests showed that the scousers found the solution they’ve been looking for.
An order was placed with BREL for 47 Class 507 units which was eventually cut down to 33 with the first set arriving at Birkenhead North Depot in September 1978 and testing commencing a month later.
Later towards the end of October a Royal Special service took place carrying Queen Elizabeth II on 507 001 and 002 between Moorfields and Kirkby. That same day she announced that the new Merseyrail Electrics Service was formally opened.
In early November the first passenger working of a Class 507 on the new Merseyrail Electrics took place as the 07:39 service from Southport to Liverpool Central.
Half a decade later and the Class 507 fleet found themselves in the same position as the Class 502s did back in the 70s becoming life expired and some of the oldest trains on the UK rail network.
Enter the Class 777 METRO trains built by Stadler which began passenger service in January 2023 which sealed the Class 507 and likewise 508s fate.
In late 2024 two farewell railtours were held to celebrate the Class 507s career in keeping Liverpool moving for nearly 50 years to much fanfare. Along with the 508s it’s not hard to see both the cultural and affectionate impact these veteran trains have had on the locals being held in very high regard.
Around the same time we found ourselves in communication with Angel Trains who asked us to produce tags for their staff along with Merseyrail, Rail Operations Group and Unimetals in return for the opportunity to bring you a piece of 507.
I think it’s safe to say the Class 507 Rail Tags is a statement release from us. A testament to the legacy these trains carried around Merseyside and our proud achievement being able to bring Rail Tags closer into the industry.
